Cases. Four of them, changing the article and often the adjective, decided by what the noun is doing in the sentence. English lost this and so an English speaker has no instinct to fall back on.
Word order that moves the verb to the end in whole classes of sentence, so you cannot build a German sentence one English word at a time.

What happens here instead
German is spelled as it sounds, so nothing here is spent on reading, and everything goes into the grammar where the difficulty actually is.
Cases are exactly what the corrections catch: you write dem where it should be den and you get your own sentence back with it fixed. After a few weeks it will tell you which case you keep missing, which is usually one specific one.
You save nouns with their article, because a German noun without its gender is half a word.
Under any correction you can ask what changed, and it names what was wrong and the rule to remember, in the language you read rather than the one you are learning.
